Maya Angelou- Touched by an Angel

Filed under: Uncategorized — rachels2014 at 1:12 pm on Thursday, April 15, 2010

We, unaccustomed to courage
exiles from delight
live coiled in shells of loneliness
until love leaves its high holy temple
and comes into our sight
to liberate us into life.

Love arrives
and in its train come ecstasies
old memories of pleasure
ancient histories of pain.
Yet if we are bold,
love strikes away the chains of fear
from our souls.

We are weaned from our timidity
In the flush of love’s light
we dare be brave
And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
and will ever be.
Yet it is only love
which sets us free

Reflection: When I read this poem I found it sad and depressing. It was telling that to set yourself free you need love but to get love you need to give yourself and your future away, so that’s why I thought it was depressing. When I read the poem to my mom she didn’t understand it at first so I let her read and she said that she guesses the poem is about love conquering all.

Maya Angelou- Woman Work

Filed under: Uncategorized — rachels2014 at 1:14 pm on Tuesday, April 13, 2010
I've got the children to tend
The clothes to mend
The floor to mop
The food to shop
Then the chicken to fry
The baby to dry
I got company to feed
The garden to weed
I've got shirts to press
The tots to dress
The can to be cut
I gotta clean up this hut
Then see about the sick
And the cotton to pick.

Shine on me, sunshine
Rain on me, rain
Fall softly, dewdrops
And cool my brow again.

Storm, blow me from here
With your fiercest wind
Let me float across the sky
'Til I can rest again.

Fall gently, snowflakes
Cover me with white
Cold icy kisses and
Let me rest tonight.

Sun, rain, curving sky
Mountain, oceans, leaf and stone
Star shine, moon glow
You're all that I can call my own.

Reflection: My reflection of this poem is that the woman in the poem works hard all day long doing

various hard jobs and she is just asking for nature to give her a break or just give her cool air and water.

She wants to rest and relax. When I read my poem to my brother he said he didn’t get the poem

He said the poem is weird and that’s why he is glad he is not a woman.

Anne Rice

Filed under: Uncategorized — rachels2014 at 12:17 pm on Tuesday, April 13, 2010

“What does it mean to die when you can live until the end of the world?” Anne Rice wrote this quote and took the meaning to new levels as she wrote a fantastic blood sucking saga anyone would want to sink their teeth into. Anne Rice is a cool, confident, and creative writer whose passion for writing rings through every word she writes.

Anne Rice was born October 4, 1941 though she goes by the name Anne Rice her real birth name is Howard Allen O’Brien. Her mother named her that because that was her father’s name and she thought it was a good idea. Howard Allen started going by Anne Rice in first grade. Currently Anne Rice is still alive.

Anne Rice was the youngest in her family and has one sister named Alice Borchardt. Her favorite movie growing up was “Dracula’s Daughter” and that’s been an influence on why and how she writes vampire novels. Another interesting fact is Anne Rice was and still is afraid of the dark, which is kind of ironic because she wrote books about vampires and vampires love the dark.

Contrary to Anne’s happy childhood she has gone through a lot with her family.  When Anne was fifteen she had a tragic incident happen. Anne’s mother who had long been an alcoholic died because of alcohol abuse. Her father moved the family to Texas two years later and remarried. In 1961 Anne married Stan Rice they were high school sweethearts and he proposed to her from a telegram while she was in Texas. On September 21, 1966 Anne and Stan Rice had their first daughter named Michelle, but tragedy struck when Michelle was diagnosed with Leukemia in 1970. On August 5th their daughter Michelle died at the age of five. But on March 11, 1978 Anne and Stan Rice had their son Christopher. Later in life he grew up to be a writer. But another tragedy happened to Anne on December 2, 2002. Anne’s high school sweetheart and husband Stan Rice died of cancer.

Although her teen years and adult life were not the best they could be her school and academic life was great. For first grade she went to Redemptorist Catholic School. That school is important because that’s the place where she first was called Anne. She went to Texas Woman’s University but then relocated to San Francisco and completed college there. She went to San Francisco State in 1964 and got a B.A in political science.

Anne Rice has had a big variety of jobs throughout her life. She was previously a cook, a waitress, and even insurance claims adjuster. Anne Rice wrote all through her life but she didn’t start writing until her daughter Michelle died, that’s when she wrote her first book Interview with the Vampire. The death of her daughter in a way did influence Anne’s book. She wouldn’t have written such dark books without her daughter’s death. It is also said that Claudia is modeled after her daughter.

One of the big people who was influential in Anne’s writing were her own parents especially her mother who died because of alcohol abuse. Anne would sit in the middle of Haight- Ashbury and write while others were hanging around the in crowd doing various activities. The reason Anne Rice wrote her first book Interview with a Vampire was because she went into a spiraling depression when her daughter died. She channeled all of her anger and depression into a hit vampire novel and published it in 1976 but wrote it in 1973. Anne rice also writes under the names Anne Rampling and A.N. Roquelaure.

Anne Rice was also a World Fantasy Best Novel nominee (1986) for The Vampire Lestat and a Bram Stoker Best Novel nominee (1989) for The Queen of the Damned. Sadly recently Anne Rice stopped writing her vampire books and found her religion again which is why she now writes book about religion.

Anne Rice is currently still alive and is sixty-eight years old. Anne’s books are still widely known and read. Many bands use Anne Rice and her books as inspiration for their music and her books were made into plays and even made into hit books. Anne Rice is still living but already has built up a huge legacy. She is a huge influence for many of the current vampire novels and recently her books have become huge because of the recent vampire craze.

I personally love Anne Rice’s book and am sad she stopped writing vampire novels. I would recommend her books to everyone and anyone. I really hope you go and check her books out.

A Little Bit of Everything

Winter is almost over and I’m very excited! The reason I’m excited is because summer means no school, swimming, and the beach. I’m tired of being freezing and I’m ready to break out my shorts. I cant wait till school is over! I’m so tired of doing tests and quizzes, but I’m really tired of homework! Although I’m excited now I know that when the last day of school comes I’m gonna be so sad, but there is a plus side I’ll get to see everyone in high school. I’m so excited about high school. I finally get to choose my classes and go experience new things and new people. I know, I know I sound really excited but I’m actually scared. I’m so scared I’ll get lost in the new school or overwhelm myself with so many hard classes or even boring classes. Well I guess I’ll just have to wait and see. I’m still excited though.

One Of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies

Filed under: Book Reviews — rachels2014 at 2:01 pm on Tuesday, March 2, 2010

It’s everyone worst dream to have their mother die but in this book One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies by Sonya Sones that happens. This book has so many twists and turns and it will always keep you guessing.  It’s a book about a girl who loses her mother and has to be sent away to her famous father who she has never met and really doesn’t like.

Ruby has never really known her father the only time she has ever seen him was in amazing blockbuster movies. But now she has to be shipped to California from Boston, away from Her Aunt Duffy, her best friend Lizzie, away from her boyfriend Ray, and even her mother who is unfortunately dead. Every wish that Ruby makes seems to never come true. Nothing is in favor to Ruby.

All Ruby’s famous father Whip Logan wants is to be in Ruby’s life and to be a good father but all Ruby wants is for him to leave her alone. He sends her to a school with all the kids of famous people and Whip drives her every day and every day she says “I want to walk myself to school”. Even worse she finds out her Aunt Duffy is going on an Archeological dig and won’t be able to talk.

But things start to get better kind of. She meets a girl named Collette and they become friends and she keeps in contact with her friends from home too. She emails Lizzie and gets updates on the daily school life and to vent. She sometimes emails Ray whom she misses more than ever. She even emails her dead mother. She also meets a new guy and tries out for the school play. But the best thing that happens is she meets Max a guy who works for her father and happens to be gay. Max and Ruby become good friends and she tells him everything. Also Whip is letting her walk to school now.

But as soon as things start to look up everything goes wrong. She finds out her best friend Lizzie is secretly going out with her boyfriend Ray. Her friend Collette is barely talking to her. She keeps on having the same reoccurring dream and a boy she didn’t know from her school died and she I haunted by his death.

It all seems like a down ward spiral until everything comes to a stop and you truly find out the details all because of one dream. While Ruby is dreaming she imagines her mom screaming at her to get out of bed now. She does what her mother asks and leaves to go to the scene of where the boy died. Around 5 minutes later Whip comes and Ruby starts crying and to make things worse as they are standing an earthquake starts. They are both crying in each others’ arm now, at that moment Ruby realizes how nice Whip is and how much she truly needs him.

After the earthquake they go home and truly talk everything through. She finds out her father divorced her mother because he was gay and the guy he loves is really Max! She makes up with Lizzie, gets the lead role in the play, and a new man!

I absolutely loved this book and author. She has a unique and different writing style I can’t wait to read other books by her. It applies to everyday life in new and exciting ways. Everyone will love it. I really hope you read this book.

The Biggest Blizzard of My Life

Filed under: Essays — rachels2014 at 11:06 am on Thursday, February 25, 2010

Have you ever wished for snow so you could have off from school? Well I have and my wish came true. Last week we had the hugest blizzard I have ever seen. I’m pretty sure it was even one of the hugest blizzards Delaware has seen. It was so terrible we had off of school the whole week. It was so amazing I’m surprised that Mother Nature could even make a blizzard that bad.  My favorite part of the blizzard was being able to spend time with my family but most of all getting to hang out with my brother Richard. We went to the ER for him, played video games, played football in the snow, and watched tons of movies.

Two days of the blizzard my brother was at his friend’s house. While he was there he was helping them tow a car when the rope snapped and the rope with a metal attachment went flying at my brother going 100 mph and slashed his arm through three layers of clothing! He was taken to the ER in an ambulance and we met him there. He just had a bad laceration but is better now. After that he came home and that’s when the fun began.

When Rich came home we really started to hang out.  We played tons of video games. We played WWE Raw vs. Smackdown, Call of Duty, Sonic Racing, and a bunch of other games. I’m really bad at video games but I still try, that doesn’t really matter because my brother always wins then makes fun of me because I’m so bad at the games.

My favorite thing that we did was play football in the snow. It was extremely fun. I sometimes caught the ball but even when I caught it I still dropped it afterwards. Whenever I dropped the ball my brother would make fun of me and yell “Butter Fingers” because I’m terrible at football. One time my brother told me to run and go deep so I did and when I tried to catch the ball I slipped and fell on ice, it really hurt my butt. Another thing we did, well my brother did, was push me into the snow. I was pushed so many times that afterwards my butt was frozen.

To end out the blizzard we watched so many movies. We watched Zombie Land, Halloween 2, The Happening, and many others. My favorite movie that we watched was Paranormal Activity. It was the scariest movie I have ever seen. I was clinging to my brother’s arm the entire time. Even he was scared too.

All in all I think I’m glad Mother Nature gave us this blizzard. I got to goof off and hang out, but most of all I had fun. It may not seem super exciting or productive but to m it was. I hope you all had as good of a time as I did.

From The Last Seven Months

C1.) There are a few similarities and differences between Anne and Hannah’s experience in concentration camps. Some of the similarities are that Anne and Hannah both went to the Bergen-Belsen which is a concentration camp. They both had lost their mothers but Hannah’s mother died in child birth and Anne’s mother dies in a concentration camp. But one of the most important similarities is that they were both broken. They were both not the same children they used to be. Some of the differences are that Anne’s father did not die unlike Hannah whose father did die in concentration camps. Another difference is that Anne’s sister had died. The biggest difference is that unlike Hannah Anne did die in the concentration camps.

D.) One thing I would ask is what ever happened to her sister did she die or live.  I would also want to know when exactly did she get out of the camps and what were some of the daily things that they went through. I would also want to know what were her injuries and if she fully recovered. Another thing I would want to know is how long did her take for her to fully adjust and recover from being in a concentration camp.
